Step 1 — Connect & demonstrate

Choose one simple pattern card and two or three pieces. Hold up a square and say, “This piece is purple. Let’s put it here.” Match just one outline before continuing.

Step 2 — Share the play

Work together on a picture. Invite the child to choose the next colour or shape; say “My turn to place a triangle. Your turn to find a square.” Accept gestures, pointing or AAC answers.

Step 3 — Grow together

Move from single shapes to multicolour pictures, then build a design from memory or invent a new one. Explore symmetry and simple patterns like red–yellow–red–yellow.

Adaptations for different learners

ADHD and high activity: Use one card at a time, a small tray of pieces and short finishable targets; offer a stand-up stretch between designs. Autism / ASD: Start with an exact visual example and a predictable left-to-right sequence; avoid unexpected rearranging of the child’s work. Developmental, language or intellectual disabilities: Reduce pieces to 2–4 shapes, provide same-colour matching first, pre-arrange pieces in the needed order and celebrate each placement. Children can communicate through words, gestures, pointing, signs, pictures or AAC.
