One Sorting Box, Different Ways to Learn

The Kinmilo Wooden Sorting Drawer Activity Box combines a slotted wooden top, bright green pull-out drawer, colourful posting sticks and interchangeable shape or animal play pieces. Select your preferred play-piece collection using the variations menu. Children explore one-to-one matching as they post pieces through an opening, retrieve them from the drawer and repeat at their own pace.

Kinmilo Together Time: A Parent–Child Play Plan

Start small. Play together. Follow your child's pace. A practical 3–5 minute starting activity, with no pressure to perform.

  1. 1 · Connect & demonstrate: Offer one easy-to-grasp shape or disc and demonstrate posting it through the slot. Say, “In it goes!”
  2. 2 · Share the play: Take turns posting a piece and opening the drawer to retrieve it, naming the colours or objects only if helpful.
  3. 3 · Grow together: Invite your child to sort two colours or choose an animal theme and make a simple 'find and post' challenge for you.

Make the activity work for your child

For attention differences, use only three pieces for one short round; for motor differences, stabilize the box and offer comfortable supported movements. Supervise all loose pieces.

What matters most: notice your child's interests, offer genuine choices, welcome different ways of communicating, and end on a positive shared moment. These are educational play opportunities, not treatments or guaranteed outcomes.

What makes it engaging

  • A sturdy wooden box with matching slots and a smooth pull-out collection drawer
  • Different picture or geometric collections grouped as product variants
  • Colourful wooden sticks and accessories shown with the sets
  • Opportunities for colour matching, sorting, posting, first categories and tidy-up routines

Play collections

Options in the selector include 25-piece geometric shapes, 10 colour discs and pictured animal-themed collections. Animal motifs include sea creatures and woodland-style animals. The exact arrangement of silhouettes varies with the selected configuration; the photos show the corresponding style.

Step-by-step parent & caregiver guide

  1. Prepare a calm space: Begin with the box, one posting stick and two contrasting pieces rather than presenting the entire collection.
  2. Show the match: Point to an opening and demonstrate placing the piece through it. Keep language short: “find – fit – drop”.
  3. Build a choice: Offer two colours or shapes and ask the child to select with pointing, gaze, a sign, a picture symbol or words.
  4. Open the drawer: Demonstrate gripping the knob and pulling the drawer out to collect the pieces.
  5. Repeat with variation: Sort animals into themes, count completed posts, arrange sticks into colour patterns or take turns retrieving and posting.

Adapting for diverse learners

For ADHD or high activity: Give a visible three-piece challenge, then allow a brief stretch or movement break. For autistic children: Keep the activity in the same order (“choose, post, open, collect”) and use first–then pictures; avoid overwhelming displays. For children with developmental delay, intellectual disability or motor-support needs: Choose larger pieces first, stabilise the box and help the child align the opening at a manageable pace. For AAC users: Present “more”, “finished”, “same”, “different” and colour choices on their preferred communication system. Play creates an opportunity to practise; it does not promise clinical improvement.

Care and safety

Wooden box, coloured sticks, removable play pieces and collection drawer as shown. Wipe surfaces with a soft barely damp cloth and air dry. Supervise use of small removable pieces and do not give them to children who mouth or swallow objects. Kinmilo products have CPC and CE testing documentation. The open-ended matching design is compatible with Montessori-inspired independent practice and Waldorf-inspired hands-on learning.

FAQ

Does every variant include all animal and shape designs? No. Choose one pictured activity configuration from the option menu.

How can I make the task easier? Offer just one opening and one piece, then slowly increase the choices.

What about a child who does not speak? Let the child communicate through the colour or picture selected; verbal responses are optional.

Can siblings use it together? Yes, adults can organise alternating roles: one posts and the other opens the drawer.

Is this a medical or therapeutic tool? No. It is an educational play material that caregivers can use alongside their established support routines.
