Wooden 1–10 Length & Counting Rods Tray
Explore numbers 1–10 using brightly colored, numbered wooden rods of different lengths and a rectangular tray. Move from noticing 'long' and 'short' to counting and arranging the rods as a stepped staircase.
Kinmilo Together Time: A Parent–Child Play Plan
Play Together. Grow Together. A practical, flexible three-level play routine.
1. Connect & Demonstrate
Start with the 1, 2 and 3 rods. Demonstrate placing shortest to longest and say, “This one is short; this one is longer.” Invite your child to touch or select a rod.
2. Share the Play
Take turns fitting rods into the tray. Ask, “Can you find the number four?” Pair a rod with four taps or four counters. Use gestures or an AAC choice if speaking is difficult.
3. Grow Together
Build a staircase from 1–10, challenge the child to find the missing rod, or explore 3 + 2 with lengths. Let the child describe the solution by showing or placing pieces.
Adapt the Session for ADHD, Autism & Developmental Differences
For ADHD, give one mini goal (three rods) followed by a stretch break. For autistic learners, lay out the rods from left to right and show a consistent beginning and end. For fine-motor difficulties, stabilize the tray and allow two-hand placement. For language delay or learning disability, use numbers 1–3 with visual modelling first.
